This
"Art
Work of Memphis" was published in 1900 by the Gravure
Illustration Company of Chicago. They also published
collections of photographs for many major cities across the
country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The
Memphis book is a portfolio of a set of nine bound books of
photographic plates which were printed by photogravure.
This process resulted in velvety highlights and subdued shadows
reminiscent of expensive platinum prints. The photos
in the books include private homes, churches, commercial and civic
buildings, street scenes, and parks. There are many rare
and exquisite photos of early Memphis included. All nine books are
posted below in their entirety. |

Dr. Wynn Earle, Jr. is a Memphis educator and collector who is
passionate about sharing and preserving stories of the past.
His love of history and collecting began many years ago when his
father would take him and his brother to downtown Memphis to
experience its many historical landmarks. While he loves and
collects all sorts of artifacts related to early Memphis, his
primary passion is collecting rare books, vintage photos,
memorabilia, and ephemera that document life for early African
Americans in Memphis and across the South. Dr. Earle may be

Note:
This
1900 book is the earliest edition that we know about.
Two
additional
"Art Work of Memphis" books were published in 1912 and 1926 and those complete books are
also posted on the Historic-Memphis website. There may be a similar edition published in 1895
but we have not been able to verify this because the publisher is
different. |
