The HARLEM is listed in the 1935 through 1958 Memphis Directories.  It was owned by Dave Lebovitz and was one of the segregated "colored" theatres in Memphis.

The GEM theatre was previously at this location from 1928 - 1931.

Glenn Moore, 3/6/2019 "My grandfather worked at the Harlem Inn next door to the Harlem Theatre, I took this picture (above)  in the late 1980’s.  The theatre is gone now but the north half of the building still stands.  Second picture is of the interior of the Harlem Inn next door (above),  Louis L. Gaia my, grandfather, is standing in the middle.  Also attached is a phone bill (above)  and inspection receipt (above). " 

 

Susan Lebovitz Feinberg, 10/2011:  "...I am writing because someone sent me the email about the Memphis Movie Theaters.  My Dad (Dave Lebovitz owned and operated several "Black" movie theaters:  Ace, Harlem, and Georgia.  He and his brother also owned and operated three Drive-in movies:  Sky-Vue, Lamar, and Sunset (West Memphis).  Unfortunately I have very little information in the way of pictures; he died in 1988..."
