CBC Souvenir Program - 1924

"It Pays to Advertise"

This 44 page booklet is a unique 1924 SOUVENIR PROGRAM for the popular period play "It Pays to Advertise".  The play was sponsored by the Christian Brothers College Senior Class and presented at the Memphis Catholic Club.  Almost hidden in the booklet's advertising pages is the information about the play - the cast, the scenes, the orchestra, etc.  And apparently because CBC had a good year in sports, they dropped in photos of the various sports teams among the additional advertising pages.   To top if off, the sponsors added a roster of the 1924 senior class, and then listed prominent alumni of the school.  It's almost a  preview of their end of year yearbook.

This booklet is in the historic Memphis collection of George Whitworth.

The Memphis Catholic Club was located at the southeast corner of Third and Adams Avenue, across the street from the Courthouse and St. Peter's Catholic Church.  The six-story building was constructed in 1923. cost $600,000 and was considered one of the best-equipped club buildings in the South with the latest modern conveniences.  There was a gymnasium, bowling alleys, billiard room, swimming pool, dance rooms, a café, and a rooftop garden.  Members could rent one of The top floor's 74 spacious apartments.   But in 1939 the building was in bankruptcy and was auctioned off for $39,056.  Although there's evidence that the Catholic Club continued to be open up to 1955, the building was vacant by 1980 and was demolished in the early 1980s.  The plaza for the One Memphis Place occupies the site today.
